This area is not actually sealed from the water, so you needed worry about marking up the surfaces where they mate (so long as it's not so bad that they won't go back together).
That said, this is not the hard part my friend... when you pull the foot off the leg, you're pulling the drive shaft out from within the leg, which goes all they way up the leg and slots into a female receiver on the end of the power head. No, the hard part is putting this back together, and getting it lined up.
Here's a tip - once you have the foot off, don't shift the f-n-r lever, because the shift lever is also in the leg, and if you move it from the position it was in when you pulled it out, you'll bugger up the shifting.
