Prime the bulb, fuel filter is full I know because its clear. I power up to WOT filter clears out it is replaced by 90% air and fuel is still moving through it but doesn't fill back up until idle or turning the motor off. But doesn't completely fill up. Please any feed back would be helpful!

Hi,

I'm guessing the filter is on the vacuum side. If so, then that is normal.

Thank You for your reply!

It is coming from a portable tank so only fuel tank, hose, primer bulb, then filter, and finally motor. It is a classic fifty runs good but not at full potential.

What is the INSIDE diameter of the fittings on that filter. Too small and you will have a restriction right there. They should be the same as the inside dia of the fuel line.

Man cheap quality filters do not have the flow capacity thru the fittings, the filter itself may be fine, but put a T and a vacuum gauge into the fuel line, test run WOT in gear, move the T to the other side of the filter and retest, see the difference.

Re: Massive Air leak!!!

Hi,

I am not in favor of filters on the vacuum side of the fuel pump with 6 gal tanks. They do seem to work and companies use them. It is just a personal thing with me. We were in the marine business for 50 yrs. So when the companies went to the higher vacuum fuel pumps they added filters which work good.
There is a filter in the tank and on each carb. I have always felt that was good enough. I use a turkey baster with a hose on it to siphon out any water in the bottom of the tank on my boats. By tipping the tank so the fill hole is low all the water and debris end up in the low corner.
A quick siphon and everything is clean going into the motor. The fewer connections the less chance of an air leak or lower vacuum coming into the engine. I do the same thing with my built in tanks too. With the exception of my 22 ft. There I use a water separator filter on the V8. The tank is to hard to get to.

What size engine are we talking about? Fuel flow requirements are a bit different between a 15 and a 200 hp engine. Filtering requirements are more stringent for fuel injection, etc.

Thank you for reply's

Fuel tubing says 3/8 and yes its coming off a 6 gallon portable tank. The in line filter looks to have correct sized input and output sized holes. Motor is a classic fifty 1988, how do you remove the fuel filter and pick up tube that is in the tank? Also you guys maybe think an extra in line filter after the primer bulb is over kill?

I had same issue with clear filter.I took mine off and replaced all fuel hose and primer bulb with merc primer bulb. Make sure if you replace line use ethanol approved fuel line. Fuel bulb was like $8
