with my fuel gauge on my 17' aquasport, when i crank the boat, the needle just jumps back and forth and never gives an accurate reading. is it the wiring or the reader in the tank?

Re: fuel gauge

Probably just the sensors in (or on the side of) the tank due to the movement of the liquid.

Re: fuel gauge

well its different every time, some times it reads full and then it reads empty when i have just filled up and most of the time it just flicks from side to side, even when the boat is out of the water.

Re: fuel gauge

Well, that's completely different info from your first post. Maybe someone else has some ideas.

Re: fuel gauge

check the wires at the sender clean and tighten,
if that is not it next check gauge do the same stuff, pos and neg, if not that it is between the two check harness.
you have an intermittent connection

Re: fuel gauge

Sounds like a bad ground or bad sending unit. You can test the gauge this way: keep 12 volt power hooked up. touch the sending wire tab to the ground. The gauge should move if it is good. Check all other wires at gauge and tank. If that doesn't work you will need to replace the sending unit. By a universal unit and measure tank depth. Typically the sending unit will need to be sized to half the depth of the tank. 12 inch tank 6 inch float height. Its actually pretty easy to do. good luck

Re: fuel gauge

ok ill test all the connections then, but do yall think it might be the reader in the tank and not the wiring?

Re: fuel gauge

if it moves up and down you do have power to the gauge, turn on power have someone watch the gauge while you wiggle the sender wire, infact remove the sender wire, ground it, the needle should peg right over. if it does not check the gauge. If that does peg the gauge and you still have the bouncing needle issue the it would be the sender.
