First post. Absolutely great forums!

My father is the original owner of a 1974 Ted Williams 7.5HP motor.

Model # 217-58882

It has given us zero issues since new until this year with zero maintenance other then changing the spark plug.

Currently I can get the motor started but will only stay running if I pump the primer bulb on the fuel tank. Once I stop pumping the bulb, it will die.

Would this be a needle/seat issue, or do these engines have a fuel pump to pull fuel from the remote tank? It's definately a fuel related issue, and before I dig into this to make the needed repairs, where do you all recommend I start? Spark and everything else is good.

Additionally, besides some of the misc parts sears still has on hand, where is the best place to source the fuel related repair parts? Carb kits, etc.

The motor gets used for 1 week out of the year and lives inside during the winter. I don't mind paying a couple of bucks for replacement parts, and out of sentimental value, would like to fix this engine rather then buy a new 5-6 HP 4 stroke or used 2 stroke. Weight of a replacement motor is an issue since my Dad is 72 years old and can't lug anything more then 50 lbs to and from the boats we rent.

Thanks in advance.

These motors have a poor reputation.
If you have had good luck with your motor you should rebuild the carb. There is a fuel pump element in the mounting flange on the carb.
Parts should be available at certified parts corp.
Your motor uses an aircooled Tecumseh power head with a water cooled
exhaust leg. Water should mist out the relief holes on the leg.It does have a pump that is probably on its last legs. If you don't mid rowing you could
just be sure it pumps and be very aware that it is cooling right.
otherwise I would suggest a new pump. You should work with a service manual. You may find an after market manual at the library.

My motor has an aluminum tag mounted on the motor labeled 642-16A.

Find this number from this page:

http://www.partstree.com/parts/?lc=tecumseh&mh=18,19

My powerhead number is AV520-642-16A

I can get the Tecumseh part number. With this number I can go to my local small motor parts dealer.

Tecumseh Carburetor Kits:

A manual your Tecumseh powerhead is :

"Currently I can get the motor started but will only stay running if I pump the primer bulb on the fuel tank. Once I stop pumping the bulb, it will die."

The needle valve activated by the bowl float was sticking closed on my motor.

I took q-tips and cleaned the needle valve hole. This seem to help.

If need a manual for the outboard let me know.

Re: 1974 Ted Williams 7.5HP Carb/Fuel Issues - Help requested

The last time it was ran, water pees out and it ran fine. This was 2 years ago. Last year I had the fuel issue and gave the motor to a friend of mine and it sat for a year. When I went back to the lake this year, I got the engine back and will now embark on my journey of feeding the moneypit.

34 years of trouble free no maintenance use I can't complain too much about.

Keep in mind the motor would get used for 1-2 weeks out of the year and was always run out of gas, fogged and put away for another year.

The only downside of giving the motor to my friend was he sold the metal gas can so I'll have to spend a couple of $$ getting a new plastic can and a carb kit.

Now to figure out how to get all the crap off so I can have unfettered access to the carb to rebuild the sucker.

I found this link and this gentlemen to be very helpful with carb kits as well:

Now to find a free manual so I don't have to drop a ton into this anchor...

Try the library for that manual. Usually have generic manuals covering many brands.

I was able to download a manual here:

1975 Eska 1976 7.5 hp outboard motor owners manual

http://translate.google.com/transla...refox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&hs=oC9

Much thanks.

Next noob question. How do I get the choke knob off so I can remove the front cover to access the carb assembly? I can remove the cover assembly, remove the idle adjustment knob, but either have to remove the choke knob, or remove the choke linkage at the carb. Do I remove the linkage to get the knob assembly out, or is there some lock washer or something else I'm missing here?

Once I can get to the carb, I'm good to go.
