Please read, motor problem

My son has a 1994 Johnson 150 Fast Streak, last week he thought he seized the motor, he was running at about 50mph for 20 min. stop to fish for 15 min. ran again for 10 min. fished again for 10 min. ran about 10 min. and the motor started to make a lot of noise ( grinding sounds ) he stop the motor, let it sit for 5 min. and tried to start, all it would do is click. He got back to the dock, put the boat in gear and tried to turn the prop, it would not move, he stood on the prop and it freed up. I was over his house today, we put the muffs on and the motor started right up, put it in gear F & R everything seems fine. What do you guys think it could have been?

he did a lot of stopping and starting , stop and start, stop and start...

it "could" be the starter got stuck and ground the bendix gear up.

I think thats a "fast Trac" , I have the same motor.
You can't see the starter gear without removing the flywheel cover.

Bad news is it could be a bad rod bearing and not the starter gear.
I guess you'll just have to find out.

Check the lower unit lube oil. Its possible the upper bearing failed from low lube level and seized. After several attempts, it may have started turning in the housing.

To answer tashasdaddy, no it did not overheat. petryshyn I took out the lower screw out to check for any metal but did not check to see if it was full. If I were looking for a boat and looked at this one I would buy it, the motor ran so good on the muffs you would swear nothing was wrong with it. My son wants to take it out, but I told him we got to check a few more things.

also check around and under the flywheel. Look for fillings and ground material.

My son did a compression check to day and the middle cylinder on the starboard side had zero comp. he pulled the head and the top of the piston was pitted and covered with a black carbon and fuel muddy mixture with some small metal shavings, he turned the piston down and said the cylinder wall looked fine. I have no idea what the next course of action we should take.
