I have a 1991 Regal Valanti 170 with a 4.3 mercruiser outdrive. I was on the water the other day and backed off the throttle rather quick and it loaded up and died. I got it started after letting it sit a few minutes and when I cleaned it out (fast idle in nuetral position) I thought it was growling a bit. When I got home I put the muffs on and started it. When I raised the RPM's I could clearly here the clatter I thought I knew what it was doing and sure enough the prop was trying to turn. Is there any adjustment on the linkage on the outside (with out tearing lower unit apart)? This noise was not there when I winterized last fall. I realize that it is not disengaging all the way out in nuetral. Thanks,

Re: Lower unit

I know with my 1996 5.7 merc there is an adjustment cable mounted on the engine. The fisrt cable comes from your shifter and connects to another cable that goes to the outdrive. there is an adjustment there. I can send you the prints for my model. not sure if they are the same though.

Have you ever had this type of problem B-4 I hope it is a adjustment problem, I don't Know much about the drive systems. It sounds perfectly normal at normal idle RPM but I wouldn't think 1200-1500 it should be trying to turn the prop do you?

I had this problem also and it was and adjustment, RPMs don't make any difference as long as it is in neutral, nothing should be moving. I do hear a noise from the outdrive in neutral but the prop isn't moving, just the U-joints.
