I recently purchased a 1973 boat with a mercruiser drive and a 140 hp Chevy motor. The guy that had the boat before me didn't do much in terms of service. I was wondering what the tell tale signs are that the the U-Joint, or the gimbal bearing needs to be replaced? Thanks in advance!

Noise would be #1, especially while turning....
If you just bought it & feel it may have been neglected, I would pull the drive off & lube the ujoints...
Reach in & turn the gimbal bearing, it should turn smoothly with no rough spots.....
You should get yourself an alignment tool as well to check alignment issues......;)
