My husband and I are having a disagreement.

One of the execs at my husband's company offered his vacation home and use of his boats in the Keys a few years ago. My husband mentioned that he would like to take the exec up on his offer. I said great, it would be nice to use his vacation home in the Keys but it's not a good idea to take out someone else's boat, especially since my husband only has experience boating on a lake, and also, my husband's boat is 18 feet and apparently this guy's boats are larger. My husband feels that if this guy is still offering, that he should take advantage of it.

What do you think? Thank you

If your willing to do that then I would go for it, but be prepared to pay for something that might not be your fault if you know what I mean.

I personally do not like to borrow things like boats and cars, I would borrow the home and rent a boat with insurance than there is no worries.

what kind of boats are we talking about? going from an 18' outboard to a 26' outboard or are you saying the boss has a big fancy twin engine cruiser?

House - Yes.

Boat - No. First, there is a huge difference between lake boating and open ocean boating. My guess is that Keys will have navigation buoys and channel markers (don't know, just a guess from my Cayman experience). Second, again a big difference between an outboard and inboard-outboard starting. The I/O you need to run the blower. Third, the big boat may have dual engines. Again handles and operates different. I won't even go into fueling costs.

That said if the boat is a center console, outboard, then it will depend upon the other half's navigation knowledge.

If he plans to anchor out, keep the anchor away from any coral. I would assume that they are protected.

I have handling boats for close to 50 years, but all on lakes. I would never go out on either a river, bay, or ocean without a lot of hands-on training. In Cayman, I didn't feel comfortable about returning to the condo until the second day as the channel markers were a bit confusing at first.

Re: Need opinions to settle dispute

That is a tough one but I would say that taking someone's vessel out for a spin is a bad idea, not to mention a collegue or superior's. What if something goes wrong, would you be familiar with the safety(or any other type) equipment? I doubt it very much.

In order to help though we would need to know how much larger these boats are than the 18'.

If by "larger" you mean that he has a 21' center console I say go for it. If "larger" means megayacht(45'+) then it would be easy to say "we will still have fun in the keys w/ out taking someone else's boat in the ocean with no experience with large boats or oceans"

I predict that you could rent a smaller boat or maybe the executive even already has a smaller catamaran or skiff to take out that would be enjoyable as well.

Of course I have the time of my life taking out my 12' tinny since I catch all kinds of fish and explore with my friends, girlfriend or my 3-year-old son.:D

I'm aware that other folks feel like they need to be on a HUGE expensive boat just to be seen on it and give the outward impression that they are having fun even though they are self-conscious about outward appearances to the point where they miss all the little things that really matter.

Sorry for the long post, my $.02 worth

First you need to clarify this. Is it your husband's company OR a company he work's for?

Big difference in the direction/input I give.

If it is your husband's company and one of his exec's/subordinates is offering, then yes, as SG GOOBACK's states.......Man rule #1 applies.

But......

If it's an exec at the company your husband works for......ie, your husband is the subordinate, go for it and don't worry about it.

I had this same scenario happen to me awhile back. Out of concern of Man Rule #1, I asked him if I broke it was I responsible for the repairs.
He said, and I quote, " I could care less if you sank the thing, that's what insurance is for"!
Evidently he could afford it.

When in doubt, ask.;)

Could turn out to be a great time.... if you don't mind me asking, is there any thing that happened in the past that may have led you to loose confidence in your husband's helmsmanship?

I'm not sure how much larger that boats are but I just think that taking someone else's boat out is the wrong thing to do, especially when he only has boating experience on lakes. It could turn into a very costly and even potentially dangerous situation.

Also, if it is more boat than he can handle, look into paying a local charter captain or similiar from down there to bring you out on the exec's boat. That way he can give your hubby some lessons and you can enjoy the ride knowing someone who is competant with that size boat is at the helm. It all depends too, if it is a 21' center console, I would easily take it out. Just gotta be careful you stay within your abilities.

If in doubt about husband's ability.......Why not hire a Captain for a day.:D

Me thinks it's daily excursions for a few hours or so.
She's just worried about getting it out and back.
In one piece that is. A long with the safety involved.:D
I would just say one thing.......
Evidently your hubby and the exec have talked boats before.
And, said exec thinks your hubby is qualified/experienced enough to take this journey in life.
You said it's been a few years since offer was made.

Go have a ball of a time and if your worried, hire a charter Captain for a day!
Just make sure the hubby has worked out the details!;)

Man Rule #1= You Break it You Fix it, No questions asked.

What happened to the old days when that was the rule?
Today everyone is so afraid "what if" or "being sued" that they dont have any fun any more.
That being said, Its still a good idea to know the boat your on, and how to handle it. Its not like you can just get out and walk when your in a boat.
Ask your boss what kind of boat it is and if there is any one there that can take you out for a few lessons. Or as stated b4 maybe hire a captain.
I say use your god given common sence and have a great time, It may never come again.

Re: Need opinions to settle dispute

I would have to agree with what most have said, and that is, OK to the house/cabin, but more than likely no to using the boat...

Boating in the keys is very tricky... its extremely shallow all over near land, and its nothing but coral everywhere, which yes, is VERY protected... the water police will fine you severely if you drop an anchor or scar the bottom with the engine (which being coral will more than likely damage the lower unit as well)...

Also its a big question of what kind of difference are we talking about in the boat itself? All boats handle differently to some extent, but he could even have a full inboard which is waaay different than driving an I/O or OB.

I say go have fun, and if you want to go out on a boat, there are lots of ways to enjoy day trips or charters where you wont have to worry about the risk of messing with the coral!

Enjoy
