I've searched the forums and have not been able to figure this out yet.

History: I have a 1988 140 V4 . It was purchased used, along with a boat from a dealer two years ago. I was told the VRO had been disconnected and I would need to mix gas - no problem. After running it a couple of times I got the "low oil" alarm (a short beep every 20 secs or so). I noticed the oil tank had some oil in it and I added a bit more to quiet the alarm. Observation since that time indicates it is drawing oil off the tank consistently.

I took a look at motor and have discovered the following:
- VRO2 pump is plumbed as it should be
- the 3 wires coming out of the pump are still connected to the mating connector - except for the gray wire. it was cut and the pin missing from the connector

As I understand it this gray wire from the WRO should be the one to transmit a "no oil" alarm Correct?

When I reattached the gray wire I get a rapid warbling alarm from the control box when the key is on. I found reports of other with a similar issue caused by a fault in the oil tank sensor that could be remedied by disconnecting those wires. I tried this but the rapid alarm is still present.

One very odd thing that happened during my trouble shooting is that I have been able to connect this gray wire from the VRO without the alarm going off once in a while. Once successful, the alarm does not come back on unless I disconnect and re-connect it again.

Could their be a fault in the VRO pump that would cause this?

Is there any way to test the functionality of the
"no oil" alarm?

Your help is appreciated.

being an 1988 i would disable the VRO2 and just use the fuel side of the pump. you are already premixing, which is what saved your motor. it is a very simple process.

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

I'm with TD. Stick with the premix.

Thanks for the replies.

I understand the recommendation on disabling the VRO. That was definitely my plan if this was not easily and reliably resolved.

Are you saying the symptoms I am describing indicate my VRO is not functioning properly?
