Throttle cable is tough to move

Hi all,

I have a '97 Evinrude Intruder 115 hp. I've read several similar threads, but have yet to find the answer to this question. I just had the throttle cables replaced over winter, but this problem has developed since. The throttle moves smoothly and easily from neutral into trolling position, but then gets very stiff as you try to accelerate from there. Also, it has recently developed an issue where when cruising at a certain speed, the motor will suddenly accelerate quite quickly without moving the throttle hand control. Once I compensate for this the motor will run fine for a while and then slow down just as rapidly. I'm having trouble determining if my problem is in the cable, the motor linkages, or the control box. I'm trying to learn terminology, etc, but I've got a steep hill to climb so thorough explanations are extremely appreciated.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Re: Throttle cable is tough to move

Any S bends in the cable?

Loops are much better than S bends, you obviously have some binding evidenced by the sudden release of tension , probably from vibration of the running motor.

Prove it by disconnecting from the motor and operate the controller, its probably free running, ( if not then take the controller apart and find where its binding)

then operate the linkage at the engine and that will probably be free ( but under spring tension as normal).

To disconnect at the engine its simple to use needle nose pliers to grab the spring clip, sometimes its just a small stainless cotter pin, a bit fiddly but simple enough once you figga out the easiest way, I find best to move the throttle so the linkage goes to the rearward position.

Re: Throttle cable is tough to move

could be sticking timing plate. missing bushing in the control linkage on the motor.

Re: Throttle cable is tough to move

Thanks for the responses guys. I'll unhook the linkage and see if that is the problem and maybe get brave enough to look in the control box if that is not the issue. As far as the timing plate and missing bushing in the control linkage, I'll have to find myself a good book to figure out exactly what to look for  . There appear to be no S-bends, but there is a loop in each cable.

Thanks

Re: Throttle cable is tough to move

Ok. I unhooked both cables from their linkages and shifted the throttle lever around on the control box. Everything seemed relatively smooth there. When I moved back to the motor, all the individual pieces moved freely when not in contact with other pieces (sorry, don't know all technical terms yet); however, when moving together as a unit, there is still some stiffness. It seems to be when the cam and cam roller come into contact (I hope these are the right terms..I'm learning from pics in a SELOC book). Nothing seems to be broken, but at a certain point as the cam (?) is pushing against the cam roller (?) movement gets more difficult. Everything still moves, but it makes "fine tuning" the speed very difficult...lots of passengers with whiplash as I try to find the happy place between full throttle and falling off of plane. Any ideas are welcomed!

Thanks

on some controls the is a tension knob, they loosing it. usually on the front of the control box.
