I have a very good running 83 70 hp powerhead that I want to put on a 92 70hp because the 92 has a better tilt/trim unit.

I know these motors are very similar but does anyone know if they are in fact interchangeable?

Also what years of lower units are compatible?

No, they will not swap. The '83 is a 49-cube powerhead using a 4-sided crankshaft/driveshaft, while the '92 is a 56 cube powerhead using a fine spline crankshaft/driveshaft.

The '83 will use units from the late 1970s into the mid 1980s with the 4-spline driveshaft and mechanical shift. The '92 will use units from later 1980s 'til the end of the run in the late 1990s using the fine spline driveshaft.
