What year is my motor

I just purchased a used 90 hp johnson outboard. the tag is missing, is there a way to verify what year it is? the seller told me it is an "86" but the parts diagram for an "86" is a little different. I think it is between an 80-83 but not sure, is there another way to find out? thanks

(Never mind...I found a tag on the motor with model and serial number on it.)

The engine serial number will be on the round plugs that are on the engine block, they look like frost plugs. Im not sure if there is a way to tell from this number but at least it's a start. OMC motors of this era used stickers as opposed to the older model tags which were aluminum plates held on with rivets. Is it possible that it's been painted over? I doubt that it just fell off.
Personally I would be very cautious about buying a motor with the tag missing.
