trolling with main motor

Does anyone know if idling for long periods of time when trolling will harm a evnrude 120 v4? it doesnt seem to bother it. but i dont want to mess anything up.

Lots of people do it without ill effects. If it was me I would make sure to always run with seafoam or a carbon guard in the gas to help with carbon buildup. I would also run it wide open for a while after I had been trolling to help with any buildup. I prefer to use a kicker motor, but like I said there are a lot of people who troll with their main motor and do just fine.

thanks, my kicker motor kicked the bucket, been using the 120 until i find another kicker.

I have trolled with a 200 hp Black Max, but oil injection varies mix to help prevent carbon build-up. ...with a 40 hp Force with mixed fuel with no ill effects, but it ends with a long high-speed run back to civilization. and with a 90 hp Yamaha, but also with oil injection. No ill effects.

I do with my 70hp Johnson (pre mix) but as others have stated i "blow the soot out" every so often
Have had no problems

hi ,i , started my motor up with my trolling motor connected to the starter battery and my trolling motor wont work now. did i ruin my trolling motor ? it a 50 pound thrust trolling motor i got it 4 my birthday

Yes, blow the soot out once in awhile and have had no problems.....yet.

A good analogy is smoking. One pack a day for a year - will you get cancer? Probably not. 2 years, 5 years, 30 years.??? In other words, its a progressive thing.

The more you idle it, the worse it will get. If you have a VRO system I would be less concerned. But if you pre-mix at 50:1 eventually you will get gunked up. I'd use engine tuner religiously if it were me.
