Trim sender unit wire broken off, serviceable?

One wire on the trim sender has finally broken off. Are these units serviceable and can it be removed, repaired and reinstalled in the water?

It's a remove and replace item if the wires are broken off at the sender.

its gotta be on the hard to repair. ask yourself very seriously if you absolutely need it before you shell out the ~500 bones it will take to replace.

if you aren't going to repair it, it is wise to disconnect the sender wires on the inside of the boat.

the sender unit is a resistor and does have voltage on the wires

if stray voltage is allowed in the water, you will experience corrosion on your drive/prop, etc. maybe even your neighbors if you slip in a marina

I do have some corrosion going on after just painting the outdrive this spring. I put on a new anode and made sure the contact points were clean so I'm curious as to why its corroding.

I see now there's a combination trim limit/sender that goes on the port side. They sell for $50. Is there a lot of disassembly to get the wires through the transom?

Yes:mad:! On mine I could not see any way to do it without removing the drive, bellhousing and bellows. Can't be done with the boat in the water, gotta at least pull it out. If it is the "old" style sender, you may be able to disassemble and reattach the wire, "new" style you have to replace. Replaced the one in my boat by cutting off the wires and made a solder splice and coated with "liquid tape" and covered shrink tubing. Works fine. As I recall you have to get the polarity right or it will work backwards:eek:. Good luck!

Don't shoot the messenger on this one, but i've seen people drill right through their transoms to pull those wires through. Just like a fishfinder wire. Shouldn't be a big deal as long as you patch it up correctly.

I had my limit switch apart this spring and as I recall you should be able disassemble it and reattach the wire. It is just a rotating contact in series with your trim switch which brakes contact when you get to maximum "up" trim. If you broke the wire you should have no trim at all, correct?

Just one wire broke off. As it failed the gauge would work sporatically as the steering was turned. Can the sender unit be taken off in the water and pulled above water to reattach the wire?

I don't think so:(. It is too far under water. and the wires probably are not long enough. Also it is a sealed unit and everything will get wet if you try to take it apart. If it is the trim position sensor, you can probably get by without it as long as the limit switch is working.

Thanks Terry, I'll wait until I take it out of the water some time.
