Here are some pics of my 1980 15hp evinrude and Im trying to figure out why she only tops out at 15mph on my 14' sea nymph. Here are some pics and would like to know what this part is and where should it be at full throttle? Also missing idle knob and when the choke was pulled out nothing happened and the arm didnt move. I added a piece of plastic to grab the arm so the choke worked as a temp fix.

go to http://shop2.evinrude.com/ext/index.aspx?s1=9c60db3eafc1f4b20ccd2da688b6ec1c and put in your model #,etc and you will find exploded diagrams and complete parts descriptions. you can get a lot of your parts here on iboats cheaper than dealer prices.

the first pic is of your throttle advance (or what ever the pros call it.... it opens the butterfly in the carb. your butterfly should open horizontally inside the carb at full throttle............. do not check while its running. put it in gear and twist the handle and look down inside the carb.......... without it in geat your throttle will not open all the way due to safety measures.

those chokes are bad about coming up missing............. what ever you have to do to make it work will do fine............. i lost the catch for mine so i just put a close line clip on it and it works fine.

as far as the throttle goes you need to make sure the teeth on the tiller handle is aligned with the actuater teeth............looks like your marker has slipped.... i lost my little indicater some how. the little wheel in the first pic should line up with a little mark on the arm it rolls against, i believe this is where the "start" should line up.

those idle mixture knobs are also known to vanish mysteriously on older outboards.

not sure about the spring.......... should be able to find it on the link i provided.

note that some of the parts are not in the section you would always expect them to be......... sometimes you have to look at the pics for surrounding parts to find the little nitty gritty stuff.

15mph is not too bad for a 15hp on a 14' fiberglass boat............

also your weight distribution also has a lot to do with it.. too much in the stern and she will plow water too much in the bow and you cant get on plane..........its a never ending battle with a small boat when you have passengers who vary widely in weight

hope i helped a little........ or at least hope my link helps.

It's an aluminum not fiberglass. Just wonder why other people state there 14' boat do 25mph with 10hp motors and 17mph with 7hp????

25mph with 10hp motors and 17mph with 7hp... No Way - not in a typical aluminum boat with average size passengers.

sorry i thought it was fiberglass from the pic

as far as the speeds you posted----- bs

i dont think its gonna happen!!

if you run a search on props you will find they are meant to travel so far through the water per revolution and you can only turn so many rpms.............. im still green when it comes to prop set up but i still dont think im gonna belive 17mph from a 7hp nor 25mph with a 10hp.

ive got a 115hp and i do good to hit mid to upper 40's somedays........ loaded i run in the low 40's to top 30's.. depending on wind, current, and people.

i have a 9.8 merc on a 14' aluminum and a 18 evinrude on a different 14' aluminum and i can tell you neither one will run 25...... i havent checked them with a gps but im guessing around 15-18, but speed is hard to judge on water.

heres a calculator http://www.go-fast.com/Prop_Slip_Calculator.htm this will give you an idea of how fast you COULD possibly go......... if you have little slip.

im not trying to ruffle any feathers about the speed claims.......... just saying i would have to see it to believe it ;) ................. and not on no stinking speedometer im talking gps... yes there is a big difference.

The idle speed adjustment knob missing on your port side works king of as a cruse control for trolling speeds. If your not using it for trolling I doubt you will miss it. If you do like to troll I doubt you can live without it. Best of luck and I agree some of the posted speeds are a bit unbelievable. Rick.

first picture is the cam follower it rides against the cam, this is your linc n sinc.

second picture the slide bar has a slot in it, the metal piece goes into the slot, and a pin or wire thru the hole.

throttle when you get the link n sinc done, the throttle will take care of itself. to start, place motor in neutral and turn throttle was far as it will go. there is a neutral speed lock out, that only lets the throttle turn so far.

the idle stop can be replaced with a bolt, with a spring on it.

the motor is set too low on the transom. you need to raise the motor about 2-3 inches, you can either use a transom elevator, or make a jack plate.
