Boat's Outboard Rating

I have an aluminum Springbok fishing boat. I think it was made in 1975. Anyway, when I read the metal tag on the transom for the maximum outboard rating, it isn't clear to me what it is. The tag says this:

943475 ____ 25 ____ Alum. Goods

(the ___ indicates a blank space)

I assume the first numbers are probably a serial number and it is aluminum. I figure the 25 may indicate that it's maximum motor is a 25Hp but since they neglected to put "Hp" on it, I do not know.

Anyone know how they indicate the motor ratings on these boats?

There should be a tag that gives info on max persons and weight. That will have the max hp on it. Some info about the boat would be helpful ( length, width) and pics.

Re: Boat's Outboard Rating

(2 X L X W) -90 = rated horsepower

Where:

L=boat length
W=transom width; if the boat does not have a full transom,
the transom width is the broadest beam in the
aftermost quarter length of the boat.

The rated horsepower may be rounded up to the nearest "5".

Follow this formula...buy the way..its the CG's method.

Oh, Yea also,It is not a violation of Coast Guard regulations to install or use an engine larger than specified on the capacity label, but there may be state regulations prohibiting it, and restrictions from your own insurance company regarding this.

There are no Coast Guard regulations against exceeding the safe loading capacity, however, there may be State regulations or restrictions from your insurance company which prohibit this. There is a Coast Guard regulation that gives Coast Guard Boarding Officers the power to terminate the use of a boat (send it back to shore) if, in the judgment of the Boarding Officer, the boat is overloaded. There is no fine for this, unless the operator refuses the Boarding Officer's order. We certainly hope that you will abide by the rating, as overloading may lead to capsizing or swamping of the boat.

NOTE: The Coast Guard Capacity Information label is required only on monohull boats less than 20' in length. The label is not required on multi-hull boats, pontoon boats (catamarans), or on any sailboats, canoes, kayaks, or inflatable boats, regardless of length.

Re: Boat's Outboard Rating

This is the boat. I currently have my 5.5Hp on it but it takes a 9.9Hp with no problem. It is a 13 foot aluminum boat. I know the transom is about 44 inches because I just changed the wood on it this weekend. I know the middle is a little wider at about 4.5 feet, but I am not at my boat to confirm that.

Just wondering what would be the largest motor it would take.

This confuses me though.
My tag says max HP is a 45 horse. (72 Glastron)
But with that code, it works out to 60 horse.

Opsty, yours wqorks out to 5.5, I will tell you from past experience that most 12-13' tinnys are fine up to 10hp.

Buzz, what is the length and width of your boat? Did you convert measurements to feet?

I remeasureed my boat. I was off by a foot.
I have a 14 ft boat, with a 5 foot transom.
All of my paper work said my boat was a 15 footer. But I never actually measured it.

That works to 50 horse.

Here's a link to the USCG regs for boat manufacturers to calculate maximum horsepower capacity. They can rate it for anything not to exceed the maximum. Make sure you pick the correct formula based on transom height and remote or tiller steering, not just length and width!

Uhhhhh, same thing.
its true, no-one reads the previous submissions on a thread.
