Hi Guys, im new to the forum but i have been spending alot of time on here getting up to speed on the world of boating.....

I have a couple of questions that i can't find solid answers to.....

I recently purchased a '92 Glastron 1700 with a 230 Volvo. The plate on the outdrive states it is a DPA 2 15, which i assume stands for 2.15 gear ratio?

1) My volvo shop Manual states it DPA is a version of the DuoProp....but mine is a single prop....so i assume it has had work done and the prop changed to a single somwhere along the line...is this correct or am i reading things wrong??

2) The boat came wit a 14x17 which is great out of the hole but lacks top end (about 30mph on speedo), and causes to the engine to rev high (5000 rpm at 2/3 throttle) I want to get a second prop for crusing, my question is will a 23 pitch be too much for the boat? I tried a 14x19 on the weekend and it did not seem to make much of a difference.....

Thanks in advance for the help

Withou knowing exactly how high your engine will rev with one of your current props, we will just be guessing. But with a 2.15 ratio, you just might need to go all the way to 23", or possibly higher. Of course you could regear the drive, but that has been a pretty touchy subject around here lately.

Re: First Boat... questions for the experts.....

The 4 cylinder engines never came with a DP (DuoProp) drive option, only the SP (Single Prop) drive. I would bet money that the upper gear box was replaced. Since that is where the tag is. Not a big deal really. The gear ratios changes are done in the lower.
DP-A2 does not have anything to do with ratio, That is just the third version of the DPA DP-A, DP-A1, and DP-A2.
Having said all that, let's move this over to the Prop forum to find you the proper prop.

Champ, take the plugs out of your engine and mark the prop with tape and an ink mark, then turn the engine one revolution and see how many times the prop turned. But have somebody watching the prop to see how many times it turned over. Then we will know the gear ratio and can help you.

thanks for all the help guys.....if the DuoProp was never an option on this this setup am i right th assume that the gear ratio is either 1.6 or 1.89?? I am getting this from the Volvo shop manual under the SP-A drive.....

Assume nothing - you don't know the history of this boat.

Clearly there have been replacement parts involved here, you need to verify the ratio and then right it in your book. The book only knows what the factory did, not what you now have.
