My tach is bouncing all over the place. All the contacts look good. What else should I check? Plus my volts gauge spikes to 16 when over 2000 rpm. Thanks for any advice.

Check your water cooled regulator / rectifier. It may be on the way out or have some connections that need cleaning.

Sounds like all the signs of a faulty rectifier. Have it checked soon as the high output being generated can damage the power pack or cause the stator to overheat. Both are more expensive than the rectifier/regulator. Also it can damage the battery. If just the voltmeter or the tach was acting up the one acting up could be suspect. When both go crazy at the same time it's the rectifier.

I'm with the "it's the rectifier" group.
