HELP 1979 hammond

i just bought a 1979 hammnd with a mercruiser 260 in it and it runs well. the guy i bought it from used it for the netire week before i bought it for skiing. the day i picked it up it ran great and i drove it with no problems. after i let it float for a while i realized that it was taking on water. the leak is somewhere aound where the shift cable runs through the dive, but i cant find any problems with the boot on the shift cable.

May have to prod around the boot and see if there is a crack in the boot you can't see by a simple visual inspection. Simple distortion could cause a leak.

If it's easy enough, pull the boot out of the boat and inspect it. If it checks out, then check the hole for out of roundness...anything that could allow water to penetrate the seal.
