My tilt/trim would go up but not down.Took it off , flushed it and then it would go down but not up. Another cleaning and now it will do both on the bench but as soon as the power is removed from the downward side the pump that tilts the engine goes back up by itself!! No local shops that deal with outboard motors,it is a very old ,80 ish, system , so I have been trying to repair it myself. The only part that has not ben flushed and clean are the trim tabs and they will not budge with the tools at my disposal.Amy one run into such a creature?IT has been sitting for a couple of years .

But are you leaving the UP side powered?

I'm curious why you removed it to flush and why you flushed it anyway.
It doesn't make sense.

Re: ghostly trim tilt

boat almost sankover the winter.Motor was stuck and the tilt trim unit had water in the trim motor.I took the unit off . unstuck the motor, oiled the unit freed it up and found water in the trim housing. It was flushed to remove impurities and now am attempting to have it operate on the bench before reinstalling it.Seems to work but the jack that tilts the motor will return to the up position with no power applied to the trim motor at all.Seems to have something blocking a passage that is putting pressure on it.

Re: ghostly trim tilt

I had a similar problem with Force 40 hp by Mercury. Replaced the motor and found water in it. Shortly after, it started hanging up again as if something was binding the pump. Replaced the motor again, but under warranty (motors aren't cheap). Then is started again. I tinkered with it a bit and suspected a faulty relay, swapped relays and it started hanging up in the opposite direction. Replaced the suspected relay and no problem since.

I hope this helps with your Rude.

mine got stuck in the up position one time after a hard rain, i think my trim switch may have a short, it just happened again, this time it wont go down. ive had to replace both trim relays a time or two. then every once in a while when things are real dry it starts working again. i know what you mean about ghostly.
