I am new to boating, recently puchased a 35hp 1957 big twin until I can save some money to buy a newer powerplant. anyhow, I bought it on ebay and was told that it hadnt been run in over a year, when it recieved new coils, points, condensers, plugs ect. So I brought it home and attempted to run it in a test tank. I first cleaned out the carbs and verified the points gap then checked all linkages filled the two line pressurized tank with 2 gallons of 32:1 mix gas and gave it a pull. after fiddling with the carb settings I finally got it running however it puts out a massive amount of white smoke. I ran it for about 5 mins and the smoke didnt appear to be letting up. The engine seems to run fine though. any thoughts? also where can I find the telltale? Thanks in advance. attached you will find a photo of the engine running.

pees out the back of leg, where all that pretty smoke is coming from. they do smoke, synthetic oil will help with that. I run 50:1 synthetic (shhh dont let anyone on here know i run 50:1, ill open up a whole mess :p) and mine barely does but with reg oil and richer mixes it does what yours is. normal. remmeber on the boat you wont see that, your moving on open area etc. looks worse when your in a bucket.

also how smooth does it idle. yours shake alotta?

schneider244, that's a classic motor, and in working order. The folks at the ramp will be green with envy. No need for a new power plant. Enjoy !

The smoke is normal. It's a 2 stroke. The oil gets burned up. It's that simple. Use synthetic, it will help. Run it out on a boat and you will not notice it nearly as much.

And I see you have a tiller. Nice. Fast. also throw some Seafoam in the tank to help condition it.

thanks for your responses. I like the seafoam idea, especially since I dont see anyone currently producing the pressurized tanks anymore!

At idle it's pretty shakey, however I have yet to actually run it to full operating temp so I havnt been able to properly adjust the carbs.

I've got the day off of work tomorrow, So I think I will mount this to my grumman and take it out for a spin! (making sure to bring the oars)

evinrude book states 20:1 for pre '57 24:1 '57-'63 50:1 '64 up

discussed many times the change has to do with the switch to bearings from bushings. not many agree exactly when so to keep it safe most say stick to what they recomend. the larger motors 30-40hp from 56 and up had bearings so the newer updated mix is said to be fine. others disagree saying piston material is diff, Ive even been told that it was also cause of thermostat use. to me I want to use the leanest mix safely mainly cause of pollution, i mean i carry enough guilt running that ol motor on my lake. I was told to run 50:1 when i bought it, have and after much reading here i am comfortable with it.

I usually use HPinjector AmsOil @ 50:1 and my motor only puffs a lil smoke at start up. after that its barely noticable and I am happy with that.

1 thing my buddy started running was the interceptor and dominator oil from Amsoil in his 70 rude. thinkin ooo high performance, more expensive must be good. Well dont make that mistake it is NOT made for outboards.NOT tcw3

ive been tempted to try the Saber 100:1 oil. one argument I have read on using synthetic is that synthetic has more 'oil' per ml so infact you are running richer at same ratios. reg oil has high content of solvents to maintain viscosity for pourability and mix properties. Synthetics have a much lower solvent content like 3-5% vs 25-30% aswell syns dont breakdown, burn, etc like reg oil. dont leave deposits all over, and bond to metals far better.

Re: New to outboards, '57 big twin smokes alot

I have a pair of '58 ERude Bigtwins that I ran for hundreds of hours on semi-synthetic Pennzoil at 50:1. The person who recommended that I do so, is an OMC/BRP dealer and authorized service center owner of 30+ years.

The only reason I took them off of the boat is because I was burning up a great deal more fuel than the single, 65hp Johnson that is now on it.

PS: The smoke in your photo is very normal. When you run a two-stroke in a barrel, all of the exhaust smoke is confined to a small space and has only one pace to go - directly up.
