Hello

After I noticed that salt water was getting into my bilge from the shaft, I realized that I was needing to change the bellow of my Mercruiser sterndrive. I was told that it was nescessary to use some kind of glue to stick the rubber bellows to the the flange of the housing and the tramson and I used 5200 from 3m and also to glue the gasket.

I read in other posts that this glue is very strong and now >I am affraid that if something goes wrong in the future with my ginbal rearing or the u joins, I wont be able to do the repair..

Help Please.. your coments will be appreciated.

use what your service manual calls for. not 5200.

I used 5200

Sounds like you've already glued it on with the 5200. If you have used the 5200, don't worry about it. You probably won't be able to get the bellows off without ripping it or cutting it off. If you ever have to replace the bellows again, you can can cut the rubber off then scrape the 5200 off the aluminum. If it's not leaking now that you've repaired it, don't worry about it, it will be fine. But next time, try to get some "Bellows Adhesive" to glue it on with.

I would not worry so much about the bellows, you can cut then off easly enough. If the gasket you are talking about is the outdrive to bellhousing gasket, and you used 5200 on both sides you might expect a bit of a problem next time you try to pull the outdrive.

I would imagine that even if the gasket was glued with 5200, you could apply the typical "stuck outdrive" techniques and if the 5200 didn't let go, the paper gasket would "delaminate" in the middle and come apart.

All this and no one ever asked what kind of drive it is.

All I can say, is this is a perfect example of why I never "Quote" a job, and second, what a DIYer can expect when buying a boat from another DIYer that never looks at service manuals.
I sure wouldn't want to clean up that mess.
