Hi, I am new to this forum so please bear with me and thanks in advance. Just bought a boat recently and owner said it had been run 3 times this year. Boat was not idling (kept on putting out), so I brought it to a mechanic, who told me to replace the fuel pump and fuel hose with primer bulb.
So, I replaced the primer bulb and fuel line and seemed to be ok. Also opened up the fuel pump and re-assembled and all seemed to be ok. Also cleaned the 2 carbs completely, and replaced fuel in tank with new fuel.
I got her running, however now I can't get the engine to shut off with the key. In a panic, I pulled the fuel line off and disconected the battery, but it still ran for about 2 mins before finally putting out. Is there something wrong with my ignition swich? Is there a way to put in my own kill swich? How can I prevent this from happening in the future if it is my ignition swich? I looked at the swich and all seemed to be ok. Any advice? Thanks again. -J

Do you have a hydro-electric drive? If so, the blocking diode in the control is likely bad. Do you have a manual for your motor?

First off, its a '73 2cyl 50hp evinrude, sorry. I'm really not sure about the drive, I don't have a manual or anything except for serial # and model # which I'll have to post another time. Does anyone know about the wiring in the control box? Which wires shut off the engine when I turn off the key? Where are they connected to in the engine? (power pack? under the flywheel?) thanks -J

NEVER disconnect the battery on a running motor. Never get the cables backwards, it will blow electronics. it probably has a bad ignition switch. Black W yellow tracer is the kill wire. see this one, http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=341160

If its a 73 then I dont believe it would have a hydroelectric drive, think 72 was the last year for those.

My comment only applies to hydroelectric drives so you can disregard.

Shutoff using choke or disconnect fuel until fixed. DON'T panic!
