Oil in wrong place??

I have a 1990 Johnson 110. The model Num is TJ110TLCEM. I have been the owner for about 3 years. It has run perfectly. It is on a 1989 24 FT pontoon. We were cruising about 5K RPM and the motor quickly lost power. It was as if the fuel was shut off. I pulled the throttle back to idle and let it idle for a minute and picked up the throttle again. The engine accelerated normally and ran for 30-45 seconds and lost power again. If I ran it at or below 3K RPM it will run normally. Pumping the bulb did no good. I replaced the bulb anyway and it did not help. I just removed the fuel filter and it was full of oil. The VRO is still hooked up and functioning. I did notice that after the problem occured that it seemed to be smoking quite a bit more than normal. It seems that the oil is somehow backflowing in the fuel system and is now in the fuel filter. Any ideas? Thanks,

If you can, move the oil tank lower than the engine.

Re: Oil in wrong place??

you have a VRO2 pump. i personally would convert it , disabling the oil side, and using it as a premix pump.

VRO conversion w/ pump still working

if the fuel side on your Pump is still working it is very simple. unplug the 2 line harness going to the oil tank, unplug the 3 or 4 wire harness, going to the Vro pump. cut and cap the oil line going into the motor. add oil to fuel tank, mix well, then remove fuel line at top carb, catching gas in a container, pump the fuel line bulb until you get premixed gas to the carb. you can tell as it will change color. put line back on carb, and go boating.

i had the same problem with my pontoon. converted and solved many problems.

Re: Oil in wrong place??

Thanks for the ideas. The main issue is the loss of power above 3Krpm. That kinda' leads me to believe that the fuel side of the pump is NOT functioning correctly. I was wondering however if the two issues could be related somehow. A "cause & effect" so to speak. When we pulled the fuel filter and found all of the oil upstream of the pump I was wondering if there could possable be a diaphram or something that has blown that would somehow bring the two issues together?

try the conversion, it solved my problem, my carbs were filling with oil, i just disconnected, as above. all my motors are this way now. better than a $450 pump.

Re: Oil in wrong place??

I get irritated at the people that get on here and ask questions and then ignore the advise of the wise ones----tashasdaddy-- I will try. It won't be this weekend, but next weekend I will be on the lake with the vro bypassed. One question---can this be undone fairly easily if that is not the fix? I would like to know what gave up? It has run flawless for 3 years and than all of a sudden---it fell on it's face and will not sustain anything over 3k rpm. What part/component went bad?
