Im currently running Champion QL77JC4 Ive read .003 is the correct gap. I this correct for my engine type?

What are you running on a similar 3 cyl?

What burns best in these old Mariner's?

You should look in a spark plug reference chart to make sure you have the correct plugs. Most inline mercs ran the gapless plugs (ie Champ L-76V) in those days.

yah Crowley marine exploded view shows that plugs to be NGK BUHW or
NGK BUZHW, and I ran the Champion version of NGK BUHW, kinda ran rough.

any one else have some input on the subject?

it is running better, but feel like it has a bit more potential, my new props coming in today, that should help, but also I replace all the electrical on the outboard itself. new wiring harness, new stator, trigger, and rectifier. New impeller kit...Im still getting a little bog sometimes, but im gonna check the timing, I suspect its the culprit.
