like the title says, motor runs great. after getting up on plane for a few minutes the motor loses all spark. as if the power pack is being grounded out. when i got home and the engine cooled down the motor fired right up.
temp gauge was reading normal temp. water pressure gauge normal.
but it seems as soon as it warms up the spark cuts out.
is there anything i can bypass to test this?
what would cause the p.p. to cut out like that and then come back?
would the volt reg have something to do with it? maybe resistance on a wire? temp sensor?
please help!

Run the motor on the hose and heat the PP with a hairdyer or heat gun. If using a heat gun, don't overdo the heat. If the motor stops, replace PP. Done.

Ignition components tend to fail when they heat up (reach normal operating temps.) The factory manual will give you test methods for all the ignition components, including the pack, stator and timer base. Any of these can cause a problem, the pack being the most likely culprit. The voltage regulator is on the charging side of the engine and has nothing to do with the ignition side.

Just repaired a 1990 Johnson 175 with the same type of problem. It was the rectifier/regulator. A bad regulator can cause the stator to overheat and screw up the whole system. Yes, it isn't the most probable cause but it still should be checked. Any diagnosis of an electronic ingition system should include checking the r/r. The origin of the above problem was caused by worn insulation where a wire from the regulator went under a clip and it only shorted when the motor was run about 15 minutes or so.

the reason i was thinking of the r.r. maybe causing it is because the red wire with the fuse on the block has a bad connection. i thought maybe resistance in that wire might cause one of the components to heat up.
any thoughts?

If that fuse burns out the engine will not run at all.

Thats probably your problem, poor maintainance is not knowing what needs to be done to keep it up to snuff.

Get the factory manual and learn all about your engine.

Clean all metal elec connections, they have to be bright and shiny.
All means starting at the battery and working through to the coils, remove coils from block and clean the mounts, thats their ground. Use a small file, sandpaper etc, dremel whatever.

Napa sells CRC elec connection cleaner spray, its some sort of acid that will work with a Qtip inside the fuse holder.

ok, i think i found the problem.
i found that the float pin on the middle carb was stuck and the motor was flooding out. being as that when the motor shut off on me on the water i had just come off plane, it could be that the motor flooded out due to the float being stuck.
i took the carb apart and fixed the issue. the motor starts right up and runs perfectly normal, on the hose at least.
would the float being stuck have caused the motor to shut off and not restart?

Certainly could have caused flooding if the needle stuck open. I expect you might have noticed fuel dripping out of the carb.
