Finding the right used upper drive

I have A 1984 470 with what must be the m/r/alpha 1 drive(not sure exactly which model). The drive was run without gear lube and the the top set of gears are grinding and done for. The bottom seems okay and just needs cleaned and reassembled. The rebuild cost is too high. I 've been looking at several top sections on Ebay but most of them just tell what kind of boat engine they came off of. I assume as long as it is a alpha gen 1 it will match up with my boat and the bottom section. But unless someone lists a 470 how would I know which one will be a good match as far as gear ratios.

Thanks for any help

Re: Finding the right used upper drive

Ayuh,... You need a Complete outdrive, Alpha 1, with 1.84:1 gearing...

You can find them here at iboats for $1195. Brand New...

Your lower unit has Eaten all the filings,+ grindings from the Blown upper unit...
Even with Cleaning,.. It will NOT survive.... Guaranteed....

Re: Finding the right used upper drive

Thanks for the advice. I was hoping with the short time it was run and not having oil in the top that the bottom would be saved by the shavings not transferring. Boat is an 84 so I was hoping to avoid the the full replacement cost of a new drive. Oh well, that would have been too easy. The good news is it will be easier to put a new one on then it would have been trying to clean the old one.
