Hello this is my first post....

I am new to boating and recently boat a 2001 Seafox with a 2000 Johnson OceanPro 90HP (Model# J90VLSIF). It was running pretty well until about a month ago.

Here is the issue:

If I put the motor on a flush hose. It starts up fine after about 3 or 4 chokes..sometimes it idles out and the engine dies since it not warmed up. Then after the second time it stays on. If I accelerate (not with the throttle on the console) with the throttle on the engine it revs up very nicely.( nice stream of water also).

Now if I put it in the water and then turn the engine on (I am not giving it any throttle) it idles out immediatly after starting up, I have to give it about 10-20 cranks..then when the motor stays on. I cannot accelerate or reverse for about 5-10 more mins until it is really warmed up. If I reverse or accelerate without giving it enough time the engine will die out and I will have to start it up again.

If I turn it off on the water and leave it off for even 20-30 mins. I have to do the same thing..wait 5-10 mins before I can accelerate or reverse.

I tried cleaning the carbs with carb cleaner, changed spark plugs, and also engine treatment (seafoam) to no avail :(. I am new to the motor. I want to try to rebuild the carbs..someone told me it might be the low speed jets...because it does not bog down when I am at high rpms.

This issue is weird because it does not happen outside of the water when it is on the hose. But when it is on the water with I guess more pressure on the prop it stalls out like that..

Has anyone had an issue like this before ? Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

I had to change to a higher octane gas . I was using 87 octane and my engine was had to start and keep running until I switched to 89 octane gas and the problem went away and it ran alot better and started easier. hope this helps.

check the plugs maybe time for tune up,check for low compression, if too low can be hard to start or wont idle, the idle may need ajusted, more back pressure on exhaust in water than out, check fuel lines for any cracks, i think some of the newer motors require good fuel as well. this is a list of simple things to check. good luck.

Thanks guys for all the pointers. This weekend I have also rebuild the carbs..didn't see to much gunk in there...one of the jets did have some gunk but not alot.

I am going to take all the old gas out and put in higher octane gas this week. I will check all the lines as well, and see how the idle adjustment is set...I will let you know how it goes.

Thanks Guys..

OK I rebuilt the carbs, spark plugs, took all the gas out ..put in 89 octane...and now even on the hose it took me about 20 mins to start it up and get it warmed up.

I am not sure how to set the idle...I was reading in another forum that it might be the hex looking bolt on each of the carbs...on the evinrude site it is part # 0342775. I tried adjusting this to no avail....Is this the right area..If not can someone direct me in the right direction...or if it is the right area what I really need to do...?

Also my cold-start procedures is: (I only have a one handle throttle..with a button to disenage the prop and just throttle)

Prime bulb till firm
Press key in to choke and turn key to on.
After about the 5-6th turn it will turn over and turn off.
After the 7-8 attempt it will start and turn off after about 20 sec.
I do this for about 15-20 more times and slowly but surely it will stay on.

I am afraid of pushing in the choke so many times possibly flooding something...
Should I be pushing the button on the control box and put the throttle handle forward a little past idle and then do this procedure.

Thanks for all your help on this guys...

Well I took it on the water. It started within 3 mins...Which is awesome.:D However, turning it off in the water, while I fish and when I am ready to go to a different spot, It still take a while to get it going..For everytime I stopped the motor it would take about 5 mins of the motor sitting in idle before I can accelerate. :(

Update:
After I got back home, I looked at one of the idle needle screws on the top right carb and it looks like it came all the way out. I am wondering if it was flooding due to this...

Thanks

So, what happened now? :) After you fixed that carb.. is it still acting up? Did you ever figure out how to adjust the idle speed?
