Did I install the outdrive on right?

Hi, I have a I/o alpha1 with a 4.3l gm engine. I am not sure if the shifter was in the right position when I installed it. I turn the prop in neutral and it spins freely. When I put it in forward with the engine off the prop will only spin one way and it sounds like it is hitting something with clicks. I turned the engine on and put it in forward and it did spin without noise.

Is the outdrive supposed to sound like that when the engine is off and it is engaged in forward?

Thank you so much. I was just thinking about it and got very worried. I didn't want to have to take it all apart again.

If it went together without abnormal effort, you likely did it right. The way the shifter setup works on an Alpha, if you don't have it in forward, you're pretty much not going to get the drive to go home without forcing things and possibly breaking something. The grabbing one way and ratcheting the other is normal. Shift it to reverse and you should find the lock and ratchet directions are reversed.
