Is early 90's 9.9hp johnson a good kicker motor

I am looking at one that has been sitting for 2yrs (in a garage upright).Owner says it ran good when he put it away. Because he bought a newer 4 stroke he is selling this one cheap! I can pick it up for $300! No controls though.
I will use it for trolling with my 19ft BlueFinn (90hp evenirude main motor)
I am just wondering if anyone has good or bad experiences with these motors.
Anything to look for when buying?

Look at the head and around the spark plugs. It should be white not brown (overheated) Check compression and spark. When you pull the plugs see if you can see in the cylinders and turn over to see the tops of the pistons and look for carbon build up.

We see a lot of these in for service and minor repairs. If you keep up with maint. they run a long time.

Most seen repairs:
starter rope and or spring
carburetor cleaning
impeller
fuel pump Not too often.

They are super nice motors. Just don't expect it to be 100% reliable until you do all the checks like water pump impeller, carb. clean, lower unit oil change. Of course, I know nothing about kicker motors, but if a 10 hp motor is what you need, you're looking at the best there is.

That's a smoking deal, do the maintenance as it's been sitting, I had a 75 and now i'm rebuilding an 83 to do the exact same thing you are doing, my 83 90 johnson needs a friend beside him.

Thanks for the replies guys. I really need this motor! We troll for Muskies and this can be an all day affair. I just hope the motor is in as good of condition as I am told!
