I just bought a 62 Evinrude 5.5Hp for our little rowboat. Bought it from a trusted friend at a good price - they never had a problem with it. This is my first outboard, so I am a little green with maintenance.

Third time out it killed the water pump. Replaced that myself. then it wasn't pulling fuel - replaced a bad valve in the primer ball, and the fuel pump. That took care of that issue.
Now I'm having another issue. It seems to run fine, doesn't miss or anything, chugs right along smooth at high or low speed - but after running it for five minutes or so I can hear a faint hissing start up and when I shut it off there is steam everywhere. I have also noticed that there is more exhaust than water coming out of the water hole. I just pulled off the powerhead and checked the gasket and everything looks fine. Where do I go next?

Thanks in advance for any pointers :).

Steam everywhere, huh? Well obviously the water pump isn't fixed, OR the cooling system is plugged up. You will have to troubleshoot it from there. Did the old pump impeller disintigrate? There might be pieces of rubber lodged in the cooling system if it did.
