I recently got this motor from a friend. It runs great but I would like to have electric start since it is on a runabout style boat. I have not been able to find much info on what I will need to do this or where to aquire parts. Also if anyone has pictures of where the starter mounts it would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyou
Tom

You might try running a search, I know this has been talked about a few times.

Starter mounts in the usual spot, on the front, starboard side of engine. There is a bracket which holds the starter and the whole assembly mounts on the engine. You'll also need an electric choke solenoid set-up to start and shut it down remotely. The motor shuts down by choking it. Motor probably doesn't have the sprocket on the flywheel which the starter engages in. So you'll need the right flywheel. Then you'll need the starter solenoid and junction box with a wiring harness running to the motor and to the dashboard, and a choke button and starter button on the dash. I think that's it?

I understand all the elctrical stuff that I will fabricate myself. what I am looking for is the starter and the bracket. I have the toothed flywheel and it has a wear pattern on it as if it once had electric start. I just need to source the starter and bracket and would like to see a picture of how it all goes together

This is all I have in my picture pile. This is a 40 hp, so ignore the hose comments.

'55 is a 6 volt starter and the bracket is different than a '57

The starter must have been changed it looks like a after market starter it says Autolite on it .Anyways it works fine with a 12 volt battery it took me a half an hour of trying to start the motor before it started. The starter motor did not get hot. The bracket is different but maybe the starter will fit on the right bracket.

Autolite is what they used back then. MDH 4001M is the 6 volt starter. It will work with 12 volts, but only in short bursts to avoid overheating.

I have this picture to share which is a 35hp Johnson Javelin if it helps.

Can't read the model numbers but the serial stamp is 1524707 which I believe is a 1957.
