I currently own a Polarkraft MV1571 which had a Merc 6hp 4-stroke on it when I bought it. I would like to have a little more speed therefore I am looking at the 9.8/9.9 models. (In Illinois we have alot of 10hp limit lakes that I would like to use.) Is there much difference in top end speed in the high thrust and standard models?

Any brand preference between Yamaha, Mercury and Tohatsu. I keep reading that Merc and Tohatsu are the same motors but the local dealer says they aren't. WHAT IS THE TRUTH??

Thank you.

Tough to go wrong right now. No one makes a bad 9.9 that I know of.

I don't know whether the high thrust motors would give you more speed but I suspect they just give more "oomph" for trolling with a larger boat. I can say that when I worked in the sportfishing industry about 7 years ago, the Yamaha 9.9 HT's we used provided excellent service.

I own a Nissan/Tohastsu 25hp motor and it is absolutely bullet proof. I know Mercury and Nissan did have the same motor, but I am not sure when and what hp models. Post in the Nissan forum on here for outboards. There are some really knowledgeable folks on there that can set you straight.

The Tohatsu 9.8 and Merc 9.9 four strokes are the exact same motor with a different shift/throttle control arrangement. They're built in a joint venture factory in Japan. Any Merc dealer who won't tell you this doesn't deserve your business. The Tohatsu/Nissan's can be had for a good bit cheaper if you have a dealer in your area. Good little motors. Several guys on my home waters have them.
