Outdrive trim unlocks in reverse

If anyone has read my other post, all other problems have been fixed! forward and reverse work beautifully, boat ran great, takes a bit to plane, seems like its laboring a little hard,(maybe prop change?) but other than that its great, the only problem now is when you engage reverse, and give it throttle, the outdrive trim unlocks and it pops up into the fully raised position. Someone mentioned something about the detend on the trim motor? does anyone know how to check or repair this? or am I looking in the wrong direction?

It would be a lot easier to help you IF we knew what you were working on.

Which is it, trim or TILT. Unless you have the apparatus on the front engine mounts that raise and lower the whole motor, intermediate housing and outdrive as one unit, you do not have TRIM and better not be using the outdrive TILT for that purpose.

My mistake, it is the tilt that isnt locking, and no, im not using the tilt for trim, i put it down and it stays down, unless i give it throttle in reverse, then it comes up into the full up and locked position

open the tilt clutch housing, it is located on the port side. has four bolts, see what pours out of there.

See if a gear stripped or what? i think the clutch's are shot, you can find it on ebay right now the whole guts. Newer models have a adjustment Allen head screw that is covered with a plastick plug, on the center of the little gear, that turns the half moon gear. That screw adjust the tension on the clutch's so it don't pop up in reverse.

And when you close it up the housing use 2 gaskets. Don't over tighten the bolts, will bind the clutch.

Give this a read:

I hope you shut off the motor immediately when that happens? Those ball gears run with the drive straight up and you are very quickly headed for big trouble.

Wouldn't this be an issue with the reverse lock valve? Sounds like it could be stuck open or something to that effect.
