Hey, to give you guys a little background about my boating and restoration experience...I have none. I picked up this 19 something 16 ft. Starcraft for $100 off of craigslist. My main goal for this boat is for it to be a reliable fishing boat. As I said before, I am a noob so I have a few questons.

What I plan on doing:

-Cutting out a new transom using pressure treated wood.
-Cut out new wooden floors using pressure treated wood.
-Paint the transom and floor wood with Rhino Liner.
-Sand the paint off.
-Use Aircraft Stripper and a power washer to remove excess paint.
-Seal the aluminum with...
-Paint the aluminum with zinc chromate...?
-Purchase a outboard.

Questions?:

-Is painting wood with rhino liner possible/a good idea/a terrible idea?
-What should I seal the aluminum with?
-What should I paint the aluminum with?
-Anyone have an idea on the year of the hull?
-More to come...

Some Pictures (sorry there links dont know how els to post them.)

I do a bit of reading if I were you on some of the resto threads.

I really dont think you need treated lumder as your not going to have ground contact, and it weighs a ton. just seal it with poly or something.

as for the rhino liner.. well to each their own i guess.

As for striping the paint, ive never done it on alum so cant help there.

Like I said read some resto threads b4 you go buy things, just to see what others have done.

Gomess welcome to iboats and since you included pictures the Starcraft club. As biffle said read through a few resto threads for other Starcrafts .

1. No pressure treated wood in an Aluminum boat.

2. The Aircraft stripper will work but Citra Strip is more freindly to the environment if you are planning to hose it off with a pressure washer.

3. The paint will depend on where you are planning to boat. There are several of us using regular old rustoleum on our Starcrafts buuuuuuut if you are planning to use it in saltwater then you will want a paint suited for saltwater.

I personally wouldnt use bedliner . Theres plenty of options to cover the Deck in a boat that are made for a boat.

You do want to use Zinc chromate to seal the aluminum with if you strip it back to bare aluminum.

Doesn't pressure treated wood in an aluminum boat cause some dissimilar metal problems.........corrosion and the such?

As for as rhino liner stay away from it on a boat . I've seen it done on two boats. One was a bass boat topside It stuck great in some spots peeled away in others it was a mess. The other was a john boat they coated everything. The same motor that use to make it zip could barely move it. it ruined the boat. As far as pt wood that's what we put in the floor of my dads pontoon 15yrs ago It out lasted the outboard. It was tied to the dock in the elements 24/7

Hey, thanks for all the input guys.

A few more questions:

-What kind of wood should I use for the transom and floor?
-The boat will be trailered but mostly used in the salt bay, any paint recommendations?
-Whats a comparable wood sealer to Rhino Liner but for boats?
-Once I strip it back to bare aluminum I should paint it with zinc chromate, then anything els, ive read of people using alodine, and skin brightener as well.

Whatd you guys use for primer?

Thanks again

Re: Project "Fish Tank" STARCRAFT

Gomezz one little thing I will add here change the title of your post to include the word Starcraft you will have guys comming from all directions giving you advice :D.

Most of us are using fiberglass resin to seal our wood and the wood of choice is ( exterior grade ) plywood not treated.

One thing I have learned here is if you strip it to bare aluminum wash it down with a 50/50 mix of vinigar and water before using the Zinc on it .

Re: Starcraft Project "Fish Tank"

Well got some work done with some buddies the past few days. First off we sanded the whole hull with 60 grit, but not to bare aluminum. After that we roughened up the existing paint, and got around the rivets with wire wheels, then power washed. After that we cleaned the whole boat with 50/50 vinegar and water. Then we painted the bottom with zinc chromate, this is as far as two cans got me, I will need at least four more. (only the bottom is zinc chromate):

A comparison of the zinc chromate and sanded hull:

A comparison of original hull and and sanded.

Found one hole in the hull:

Will cover the whole hull in zinc chromate soon.
