Hey guys noobie here! I just got my 1991 Bayliner capri classic with a Mercruiser 3.0L 4cyl motor. It runs great all tuned up and I have taken it out on the lake twice so far.

The fuel was about 3/4 full when I got it and it seems that I never see the fuel gauge going low?? Im wondering if this thing is this good on fuel or is there a problem? when the boat is in the water tank reads differently than on shore. Anyone with this motor please let me know how their mileage is please?

Thanks

gas gauges on boats are notoriously inaccurate....do not rely on them ever IMO. Best thing to do is fill up after every use and keep track of how many gallons you put in after that particular day taking note of how much you ran the boat that day....you will have a feel for it in no time. Its been a while since I had that engine but I would use an estimate of about 4 miles a gallon

4 miles a gallon is about right. I have a 2003 17' Starcraft with a 3.0. It has a 23 gallon tank. It has a potentiometer that sticks out of the top instead of a float inside, but i have never trusted any gauge on a boat i have owned.

I always fill it up before we go out. I estimate that we can go about 80 miles.

We live in Seattle, (you can do google maps and see my route)

I can launch at Magnuson Park on Lake Washington, go through the ship canal, go out the locks to the waterfront and back, and do some tube pulling or water/wake boarding along the way, and come back with about 1/4 tank left.

total distance is about 30 miles, most at wake speed, about 15 min or so at 3000-3500 rpm going from the locks to seattle and back each way.

and a hr or so pulling a tube or waterski/wakeboarding

Thats with 3 or 4 people, 600-700 lbs loaded

Thanks!! I didnt think my tank would be around 23 gallons thats as big as my Jeep Cherokee! a couple more questions, do you use premium gasoline and how do you know when the tank is full from gassing up at the station?

Thanks

Yeah, they tend to be as large as a small trucks gas tank. I want to get a 23 foot Cobalt, but i dread filling the 50 gallon tank.

I just put Regular in it most of the time, i filled it with extra once but didnt notice any difference.

I fill the tank when the nozzle stops the first time. I dont know if i have a vent issue but i can put another gallon or so after that, but i have a heck of a gas smell if i do, untill i burn half the tank.

Cant seem to find a leak anywhere, none in the bilge and none in the ski locker on the other side of the tank.

Maybe someone else can chime in about that. If it sits in the heat with the cover on it, there is no smell either, strange.
