Hi Forum,
First time poster, long time reader.

I have a 2000 Yamaha 115 2-Stroke. Right now it wil not start. I am pretty mechnically inclined and do all of my own maint on the engine.

Here is what I have done so far:

1. Battery good, motor turns over no problem. Good.
2. Checked fule ball , good pressure. Good.
3. Checked spark, shocked myself on all four plugs. Good.
4 Checked carb bowls for fuel. Good.
5 Checked fuel filter, clean. Good.
6 Checked fuel all the way to the fuel pump. Good.
7 Cleaned carbs fully. Removed needles, floats, and other plugs in carbs. Soaked in Parts Cleaner, sprayed clean with carb cleaner and reassembled. Done this a bunch of times in past to solve issues. Geeting quite good at it...;)
8.Checked vacum lines. Good.

What else am I missing? I am not sure what else to check. Thanks for the help inadvance!

Re: Yamaha 115 - Wont Start

I bought a whole new key switch which includes the safety siwtch, but the thought did cross my mind.

Is there anyway to bypass the switch?

Can anyone help me bypass the safety lanyard so I can diagnose this problem? Thanks! I am not an electrical engineer, so detailed instructions would be very much appreciated.

Re: Yamaha 115 - Wont Start

have you tried the emergency start procedure of disconnecting that wire just below the ECU on the side of the motor?..it's described in the owner's manual.
Good Luck!

safteylandyard cuts off spark, you said you had spark.does your choke work?try enriching fuel mixture, spary some fuel mixture into air intake. you need to find out whats missing. there are only three things,air/fuel- spark/timing- and compression. one of these is missing or wrong

Have you checked the flywheel key? Sheared and out of alignment?
Plugs firing on the exhaust stroke is not an efficient way to start a motor...

Let us know, I have the same model but different year, need to add your solution to my bag of tricks, hopefully I never have to open the bag.

Try a systematic approach. "Outboard won't start" in the Engine FAQs Forum.

Let us know what you find.

Re: Yamaha 115 - Wont Start

Ok,
thanks for all of the good info.

I took the plugs out and sprayed some starting fluid in there. Crankd her a bit and she started for about 5 seconds then died.

This leads me to beleive it is not an electric problem.

This most likely is a fuel problem. I took carbs off again and decided to look at them to see if I missed something. There was some jelly/gel like substance around the carb inlets. It wiped off, but I figured this could be a bad sign.

SO now I letting them soak overnight in parts cleaner, disasembled of course. Then I plan to spray the crap out of them with carb and choke cleaner after I take them out. Let them dry for a day and night.

After I re-assemble and it still doesnt start. What would be the next step in troubleshooting?

When you think you have them real clean,go through them one more time, and pay special attention to the jets and passageways. Use compressed air to blow out also. Good luck

if you found gel then it's probably in carb jets, contaminated fuel, after you clean carbs out this time, check your fuel for water contamination before pumping it right back into your clean carbs and screwing them up again. hope this turns out to be your problem and the motor starts right up and runs. at least you've become a bit of an expert on the Yamaha fuel system. Good Luck!

Re: Yamaha 115 - Wont Start

Ok, thanks for the info fellas.

I dunked them in parts cleaner all night, cleaned them with carb and choke cleaner again, and let them dry for the night. RE-assembeled and still will not fire up. IT will fire with starting fluid, but dies after 5 seconds.

I talked to a few people and they suggest taking it for an ultra sonic cleaning. Dropped them off at the local marina and he assured me they would be clean when I get them back.

I alos added some fuel stabilizer to my tank to help keep the ethanol/water issue under control.

I am very confident when they come back they will be clean and the engine will fire up. Will keep you updated.
