Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

when you rotate the prop counter-clockwise in FWD gear, the prop does rotate? or does it lock?

if the prop does rotate counter-clockwise in FWD gear, you need to pull the drive. not a huge deal to pull the drive, as Don S said, about ten minutes

if you need info on pulling the drive, head up to the top of the forums page to adults only sticky and open the merc manuals link and download the appropriate manual for your drive

depending on the year of your drive it will be either #6 or #14

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

Let's do this again. Put the shifter in forward gear.
Turn the prop COUNTER CLOCK WISE.
It should catch and stop. If it will continue to turn, but now turns hard to CCW,
1. look at the prop shaft while you are turning the prop CCW. Is the shaft turning? It's just a yes or no answer.
2. If the prop shaft is turning, have someone look inside the boat at the shaft going into the coupler. Now, continue turning the prop CCW, is the shaft in the coupler turning. Again, it's just a yes or no answer that is needed.

FORGET about what happens when you turn the prop clockwise when in forward gear, it means nothing at this point.

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

I just noticed something else when I turn the prop clockwise when it gets the area that its going to make that clunk It appears as though the prop gets pushed slightly away from the outdrive itself? what does this mean or is it not telling anything

Ayuh,... That's Normal...
Back to the issue when I turn the prop I cannot really see where anything is turning inside the boat although it Is somewhat hard to see. So first off Don had suggested removing the outdrive is this advisible or no?

It's Got to come Off to fix anything...
And truely since I am new to all this if I did remove it what exactly would I be looking for once I remove it

There are Manuals in the Adults Only section,... Read it...
also will I need a pan under it or anything I mean will there be a bunch of gear oil?,,,

Drain it 1st..
Also if we went with the assumption the shaft is broke like the picture in previous reply is this something that can be replaced or do I need a whole new outdrive?

You would need a new vertical shaft,... No, I serious Doubt you'll be able to change it...
A New SEI lower unit might be cheaper than having your's Fixed...

But,...
We still do know exactly What's Broken....

Ayuh,... It's been lain out, Complete with Pictures,...

I'd say at this point you probably otta call a Mechanic, or sell the boat....
A brand new complete Outdrive is alittle less than 1/2 what you paid for the boat....

Something is broke, so yes it's going to cost money to fix. come on guy, get real. THINK about it.

How much It's going to cost is another impossible question to answer at this point.
Reason is, we don't even know what is wrong yet. Let alone how much to fix it.

That is where you have to get up off the computer chair and actually go out and take things apart and look. Right after you download the manual so you have some idea what you are doing.

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

pull the out drive takes 10 min and $7.00 gasket set then you will know for sure . shaft us hard to see if it is turning in some boats. On mine rubber melted on coupler and it would not move and would have overheated if i had kept running.

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

Don first off I know its going to cost money , And I dont expect anyone on here to tell me how much. The point I was trying to make is one person says pull the drive others say just turn prop. Well I cant turn the prop and have the answers some are looking for if I pull the drive off. With that said I do obviously have an issue and I know pulling it is simple. Here is a thoought I was searching ebay today and there are lots of drives on there couldnt I just buy another used drive and put it on. Thanks

Tell 'em how ya really feel, Don!:D Either way, you will need a new outdrive. If you were to go the eBay route, you could get bit in the long run. Do YOU know the gear ratio of your drive? Do you know which drives are compatible? As suggested, your best bet would be to get one of the SEI drives from here. It may be more expensive, but it has a warranty, and you know you're getting it from a reputable source.

hey don ,,, MMM never mind not worth it, Anyway to everyone else thanks for your help, This is why so many people get turned off by web forums, and Ya maybe the boat is used but it is rather nice and its a way to get the family together and sorry I dont have a bunch of money to buy new stuff. And sorry if anyone was offended by the ebay remark, but if I bought a new outdrive the boat will suddenly have cost way more than its really worth not to mention I dont have that kind of money so If anyone has good inputs or can help I appreciate it. thanks

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

Hunter - I see you are frustrated - maybe rightly so. The bottom line is that something is broken in your outdrive. You can pull it off the boat and still do some diagnosis. Pull it off and then with the drive in forward gear, turn the prop counterclockwise. See if the driveshaft turns. If it doesn't, something is broken.

I can pretty much guarantee that if any of the gears are broken, then it will cost more to have it fixed than it will to buy another outdrive.

A new outdrive costs in the neighborhood of $1,200 to $1,400 - depending upon where you buy it.

A used one will cost less. As with anything used you take your chances. You might get a great used one for very little money. Ya' spend your money and take your chances. ;)

Let us know what you find - and what you end up doing.

Hey, don't get upset and discouraged. If you feel it's slightly over your head take it to the mechanic. Probably won't cost you anything for him to take a look and give you an idea. You can go from there...

Re: help I think I have outdrive problem

there are used boats everywhere for parts. buy a whole boat there is one down the road i am going to pick up 300.00 for boat trailer engine and outdrive, they are out there. It is scary going into a unknown problem but once you figure it out you will realize it is not that bad just alot of work.Which boats are or this site would not be so popular. compred to a car boats have alot less parts mechanically anyways.
