I have set the point gap and it's dead on the spec. of .018 the dwell angle spec. is 25 degrees and I show only 12 degrees on my meter whats wrong here? Are my points worn out, is there a way to get the dwell in spec or should I just set the gap and forget it? It's a Ford so I don't the option to adjust with motor running.

Assuming it is a V-8, is the dwell meter set for 8 cyl. ? If so, if the dist cam lobes are worn too far, it's hard to get point gap and dwell to come together. If it runs fine w/ points set where you have them, I wouldn't lose any sleep over the dwell.

Oh man that would have been a bummer, but lucky for me I had the stupid meter hooked up to the pos. of the coil and ground rather than the negative points side and ground, it's just been so long since I used that dinasour meter. anyhow the dwell is spot and so is the timing, i had left my key on last trip home and was worried I burnt the points but all is good, thanks for the reply.

just for the future, go by the dwell, the gap is just for getting in the ballpark.
this assumes that you use the correct terms....:D:D

Well in the end it turned out the .018 spec on the gap also put the dwell right on spec, which is what I expected in the first place but thanks.
