I have a mercruiser I-6 with a 165 omc outboard. Done a lot of work including new engine, plug, verified firing order and timing. Starts and Idles great. When you open the throttle the boat starts to plane out and seem to be about up to half speed and then cycles a little and then just stalls. I have rebuilt the carb and same result. Any help would be great. I am a new boat owner and basically a backyard mechanic so willing to do the work just not sure what to do at this point. Someone mentioned water pump but not sure how that fits in with my indications.

Could be you're running out of fuel. If that's the case, somewhere you either have a restriction or air leak on the intake side of the fuel pump.

First thing, check any filters and anti-siphon valve.

Re check float height, then check fittings and hoses for leak and vet for obstruction and fuel pick-up tube for debris getting caught in the pick-up screen.

Re: engine stalls while trying to plane out.

I had this same issue with my 470 I/O. Replaced and rebuilt damn near everything. My last step was to simply attempt to isolate different aspects of the fuel system. I started with the gas tank and bought a 6 gallon topside tank and completely bypassed the fuel tank. The boat ran like a dream. Turns out this whole time I just had a ton of crud built up in the tank that was clogging the intake.

Re: engine stalls while trying to plane out.

this a stringer what year. If yes then follow the wires from the micro-switch's on the shift converter, to 2 spring clipped plugs, they are the small ones, that plugs into the esa module, located on the starboard side on a metal plate.

not the large ones that are also spring clipped. they are the fuses that go thru a plate.

With the esa disconnected run the boat get back to us with the result.

so do i for a motor but i have a omc drive like him. that means he has the shift converter for a omc, stringer, then he has to have a esa sysytem.

Ok...I see what you are saying. Couple things. First we don't know if he has a mechanical shift stringer or an electric shift. Second, I doubt this could be an ESA problem anyway since it only stalls while trying to plane. Sounds like a fuel issue.

Re: engine stalls while trying to plane out.

Thats why i asked the year. But if a early cobra will fix it also.

fixed my problem that took me months to figure out, i too thought it was a fuel issue, this is free and easy and he can plug them back in and only takes a minute.

i pulled the plugs when my friend was driving and it fixed it instantly.
