Removing Anti Fouling Paint.....

Some of it is coming off with regular cleanings, etc. I also notice drips from CLR reduces it as well. Do not want to sand it. Does anyone have any experience removing? Looks to be only one thin coat.

Is there a risk in using regular paint remover? I would prefer to keep the anti fouling paint on than some eaten up gelcoat by paint remover. Thanks in advance for any advise.

usage is making ours come off like peeling sunburned skin, and when you wash it, it smears black all over the place:(
I was going to try a brillo pad style on the buffer and see what happens?

I'm guessing you want to remove it because it doesn't stay in the water and the bare hull will look better on the trailer?

Regular paint remover is likely to harm your gelcoat. You've got to be careful not to use anything too harsh.

It can be a tough job. I did mine last winter- ultimately by hand scraping and sanding. I started the job by using "Peel-Away", a chemical stripper specifically made for removing bottom paint from fiberglass. Worked OK but I needed a second application to get rid of all the old layers. That job was very messy and getting too expensive so I looked for another way.
Soda blasting is popular these days- it doesn't harm the gelcoat but will take all the paint off.
I've heard that oven cleaner does the job but have no first-hand experience.

NOTE: if you use an abrasive to remove bottom paint, it's recommended to apply a proper epoxy barrier coat because fiberglass is porous. I did 5 coats of Interlux Interprotect 2000E before applying my new bottom paint.

Here's a couple shots of my hull: during the strip and the finished product. It was NOT a fun job!

If you are going to scrape and sand, be sure you have a proper respirator and wear protective clothing, like a disposal Tyvek suit!

Thanks. The painting was relatively easy.
I'll NEVER AGAIN do all that hand stripping!
It was waaaaaaay too much work- but I saved a thousand bucks (cost to soda blast).

Leave it on. It's the bottom of a boat. No one can see it when you're on the water. Every hour scrapnig and scrubbing in a tyvek suit and respirator is an hour not riding around in the breeze, fishing or wishing.

If you really can't stand it, just paint it.

I used citri-strip from the orange box to take the bottom paint off of mine, it won't harm the fiberglass. The stripper itself is biodegradable , to bad the paint itself isn't. I used one gallon for my 18' er.

Re: Removing Anti Fouling Paint.....

had to edit my post as things started coming back to me

I tried a bunch of different strippers, Interlux, etc.. Finally settled on "peel away" on clearence from one of the box stores. You really need to cover it with plastic wrap after you apply it for it to work well. After it sits for a few hours, you scrape with a platic scraper and SCRUB real well with water right after scraping. The water scrub and washdown removes most of the paint

oh, I had 20 years and atleast 7 or 8 layers of paint.. I used the oven cleaner too (Easy Off regular), it works but way too costly in thenumber of cans required. Used it mostly in the chines. Wear long gloves and be careful as it will eat through your skin. I had gloves and still know from experience.
