I need to rebuild my Rochester 2GC carb on my OMC 140. Can I just go to the local automotive store & get a rebuild kit or do I need to order a specific marine kit? I've never rebuilt a carb before, but it seems pretty straightforward from reading the Solec manual.

You need a kit specific for your carb. Iboats is one source, or even NAPA.

You can go to an automotive store but be sure to ask for a marine kit or a marine carburetor.

What's the difference between automotive and marine. The kit I bought through Mercury had instructions in it for 1960's cars.

when you order your rebuild there should be a little tin tag on your carb about 1 inch by 1 inch thats probly on the top held on by 1 screw take that tag with you when you order your kit that help ensure you get the right rebuild kit

There is nothing marine specific about the "soft" parts. The gaskets and seals won't know what application they are being used in. The "marine" differences are in the carb design - fuel bowl overflow/venting etc. As long as the "auto" kit has all the needed parts, it is not an issue.

Go ahead and replace the fuel lines (must be marine A1 rated) and the overflow tube from the fuel pump while your at it. Old decaying lines send all that trash into the carb, hate to rebuild again in a year or so.

I didn't like the new accelerator pump piston. The plastic plunger was shorter and it caught on the side of the bore, folded over and leaked by. I changed back to the original pump and it's fine. The new main jet was different too. It didn't have the holes on the side of the jet body like the original. Check your new parts with your existing to see if there's a difference.

If you've downloaded the Merc manual for your engine it might have the detailed step by step instructions on rebuilding your carb.
