Hi everyone, i am new to the forum and have as question as to what may be wrong with my 1998 mercury 4cyl 40 hp.2 stroke engine serial #0G011278----It all started when my temp alarm started to squack constantly- even when the engine was off. I suspected the alarm sensor module was faulty because when i disconnected it at the temp sensor next to the # 1 cylinder, the alarm turned off and when i reconnected it, the alarm stayed off. it was when i was running the engine that i notice water coming from the area aroung the #1 spark plug. I

I suspect that this may be a faulty water jacket gasket, but could it be worse???? I removed the plug and it smell like water and steam came from the cylinder.

I have now removed the water jacket cover and cleaned off the old gasket and am waiting for the local boat shop to open on monday to order the gasket. Does anybody have any insight into this situation??? I am truly hoping it is not a head gasket issue as i do not have that much technical knowledge ---yet!

thanks very much.

as long as nothing is cracked your on the right track and your problem should go away - unless of course the cover is warped badly . it's very common though to change the gasket .

thanks for the reply, Iwill get the gasket and borrow a compression testor and torque wrench. Any insight what the torque is for the bolts on the water jacket cover?

hand tight - its somewhere around 35nm not in./lb it's not much at all but 1 tyhing i found when i did torque mine was that there was a slight warp somewhere not very noticeable because mine dripped in a spot or 2 using the torque specs so went around and tightened them a slight more by hand till it stopped dripping and then just a snug more for good measure - 3 years no problems .
