Recently purchased a Volva Penta 130D with 280 drive. Was purchase at an estate sale. Previous owner had died and the boat has been out of the water for two years. Also, the unit was not winterized and it froze up. The freeze plugs in the thermostat housing popped out and I reinstalled them. They seem to be ok. The water lines to the Oil Cooler also were pushed out and the seals damaged. I installed new seals, but the unit leaks pretty good. I have ordered all new O-Rings and seals for the Oil Cooler and water lines. My question is this. What keeps the water lines tight in the Oil Cooler enough to seal them so they won't leak. I have installed new seals on the inlet and outlet lines, but they still leak. Not enough to sink the boat, but since I've never owned an inboard, I don't know if this is normal.

Also, a stupid question. It is a real pain to install the drain plug from inside the boat as the drain hole is below the engine in a real pain in the *** location. Can the plug be installed on the outside of the boat, below the sterndrive? Would be a lot easier to get to.

Thanks for the input.

Those copper tubes may be damaged and distorted and/or cracked from freezing, and may need to be replaced to cure the leaks.

The water pipes are a royal pain to get seated. You'll need to bend them back to the correct orientation and keep dry fitting until you get them as close as possible. Those are square cut o-rings so make sure you lubricate them so they don't roll while pushing them in. Be patient and make sure you've got a good bilge pump!

you can install drain plug kit or special brass pipe, seal it well (transom wood)with 3M 4200/5200
drain plug should be outside for easy access (most boats have it that way)
