I have a 1972 Evinrude 125283R V4. I would like to add a tell tale to it. I am lining up the OE parts per this thread : http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=222677

The port mentioned in the thread where it is suggested to tap the hole is already tapped and there is a plug installed in the hole that has a slot for a screwdriver. I attempted to use a really large standard screwdriver but it did not seem to want to budge. Is it safe to heat this with a propane torch or should I use a ratchet with a standard screwdriver bit? I am most worried about breaking the plug if I apply too much torque and having to drill and tap it anyway which is somethign I would really like to avoid.

Thanks in advance.

What material is the plug made from?
I'd try an impact screwdriver, they work wonders on stubborn screws.
Heat is a last resort when all else fails.

I'm not sure of the material. I'm going to put a magnet against it to see if it is steel or iron. I'm thinking steel but I am not sure. I had considered an impact screwdriver but I was nervous about hammering on an aluminum block. Do you think the flat blade bit in a socket with a 1/4" ratchet is feasible to see if it needs just a little more torque then I can twist with my wrist?

Try a rachet. I have used an impact driver with sucess before, you don't have to use a sledge on the impact. If you try a rachet, don't round out the slot, makes it really hard to get out.
