Hello All,
Here is my problem, recenetly I became a new owner of a 1986 Bayliner 19' cuddie cabin with a Force 125 hp motor. I got the boat with a trailer for free, and thus thought it was an ok deal. I am new to the power boating world and thus have the usual problems and confusion with the 2 cycle engine. so here it goes. I had the boat in to a marine mechanic and he got it running, by totally cleaning the carbs. I took the boat home, it sat for three months before i could rip it apart and fix the floor and many other cosmetic problems. I went to start the engine, and it would not stay running. I ran it around the lake for 15 mins and when i let it idle it died and never restarted!! I replaced the spark plugs with Champion plugs UL18V, changed out the old fuel with new 50-1 mix, changed out and replaced fuel filter, checked the compression (all around 120 psi...ok i assume), replaced the impeller, got a new battery, drained the carbs, has good fuel running through them, and leaks out of them when it does not start, so i know the fuel is going through. So after all that, it runs worse then when i had done nothing to it. In fact it does not run at all! any ideas? Bad spark? Timing? thats the only thing i have not checked? Please help the summer is almost over. Thank you

How much you got into that free boat now? Sorry couldn't resist. Search waking up a sleeping motor and implement to have a starting point. Problem sounds like fuel delivery as opposed to electrical

Reread your post. You didn't mention fuel pump diaphram or check valves. Check'em.

If the carbs are leaking, that's the first thing you need to fix,as it might be flooding, and not able to burn the rich mixture, and yes check the spark. Get these things taken care of ,and post back to us . MOPARMAN

I will look into all the suggestions this weekend and will get back to all of you. Just a side note, the carbs were professionally taken all apart, cleaned and put back together. The Mechanic had it running for 45 mins straight without a problem and said that he himself was supprised, and looked like i got a good deal on the motor. I have invested total only 700 into the entire boat rebuild minus my time and labor...still over all its a learning experience and have had fun.....isn't that what its all about? Thanks again

Re: Force 125 hp Motor problems

So here is the update, Got great spark in cyl 1 and 2, no spark in cyl 3 and 4. So this leads me to think its the CD ingition box, specifically CDI box B, which controls cyl 3&4. I did not test it, but think its rare for both coils to go bad at the exact same time. Let me know if anyone thinks it could be all three things or maybe just the coils or if i am right and its the CDI Box. thanks for all your help. If anyone knows where to get the box for cheap, please let me know too!
thanks,
pete

Before changing any parts, clean the connections to the CDI modules at the circuit board if you have one or clean the plugs if you have plugs. Also, tie wrap the plugs as they tend to loosen up with age as the plastic shrinks.

Re: Force 125 hp Motor problems

Thank you, i will look into cleaning the port and checking the plastic and securing the points. I also ordered a CDI B part for $210, as a percaution. I hope that this is the last problem i have for a while, but i doubt it and will be chiming in to let you all know if it works, or blows up in my face....I give it 50 50 chance, and if it goes south i might be having a fiberglass fire soon! Thanks again

Re: Force 125 hp Motor problems

Still a problem....I replaced the CDI box with the correct replacement part, hooked up the wires using the diagram, and still no spark in cyl 3 or 4. Then i unhooked the CDI box from cyl 1 & 2 and attached it to the coils from Cyl 3 &4...that produced good spark in both coils. That ment to me that all coils are good, and seeing how the CDI box is new, i have to assume that it is good too. That leaves me with a new problem. My thought was then that it could be the Stator...i removed the flywheel, visually checked the stator and saw now signs of ware to any wires. the wound wires within the stator are coated so was unable to check with a voltage meter. My question is if the stator is bad, or a wire is bad, would that prevent only the CDI box for Cyl 3 & 4 from working? My other thought is the small junction box where the stator hooks up that turns AC to DC current could be bad? Does anyone have any other ideas? Thank you

Re: Force 125 hp Motor problems

You can check the windings on the stator with an ohm meter. The wires on the stator go to the 12 position terminal block on the coil mounting plate. The link that moparman attached to the CDI WEB site has the resistance readings and color of wires you need to check. Guessing at what may be wrong and buying parts without double checking can be an expensive way of fixing the problem.

Re: Force 125 hp Motor problems

So here I stand,
I think i am looking at a problem with the Trigger assembly. Would that cause only two cyl to fire and not the other two? Is the stator more common to fail or the trigger? And if anyone knows where i can find replacement parts for cheap that would be nice too. Thank you for any help
sincerely

Pete, the site that I posted should have all the values to test the components of the ignition system. By going through these test you should be able to identify what is wrong with your ignition system, and you also need a good shop manual as it will be a great investment.Hope this helps, keep us posted. Pete,

You already spent money and didn't fix anything. Listen to moparma's advice, you can go broke on boats if you don't think before you leap.
