Hi first time posting here, really hoping someone can offer some advice. I have a mid 60s Sears Ted Williams 9 Electric model 57459552. I just picked the motor up for a song and it seems to be in very good running shape with the exception of the bad impellers.

I bought a new impeller and replaced the bottom impeller (engine feed), I can live without the Bilge-O-Matic feature until I can find a couple more impellers at a better price (well I can hope anyway).I replaced the impeller and put the pump assy. back together. The trouble I am having is now putting the bottom end back on the lower leg. The Woodrift key that fits the bottom of the shaft to the driver gear has fallen off. It doesn't seem possible to but it back in from the top. I assume you have to take the prop assy. and the transmission out to get at the gear and shaft from the bottom.

Is this the correct way to put the key back in the shaft?
Is there any advice in how to do this? (besides buy a manual)

I now see the correct way to replace the impeller is to keep the shaft attached to the lower when removing, and only pull it out of the squared top. And to be very careful when disassembling the pump to not disturb the shaft position in the lower end, replace the pump and plate assy onto the lower end and fit it all back together as one piece into the lower leg. This way the shaft does not come out of the spline gear and I the woodrift key does not get disturbed.Well live and learn.

So I just need to know the easiest way (tips and tricks) to reinstall the key onto the shaft and spline gear.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
-Greg

Re: Ted Williams 9 Electric - Shaft Woodrift Key

There is a weedless gearcase with a small morfed curved skeg. And a standard gearcase with a longer skeg with a straight front edge.
It appears there is a snap ring holding on the pinion on the standard case.
The weedless doesn't show a snap ring in the exploded view.
Dissassembly of gearcase is straight forward. In order to service the pinion shaft. On standard remove the 2 retaining screws and twist the bearing cap slightly to break seal most of the transmission assembly can be removed
at this point. The weedless has 2 bolts but no cap.
By the way don't run the motor without a battery hooked up.
