hey, having trouble pulling my 1954 10hp seahorse (qd-15) i can pull it great without the plugs in but once their in it pulls really hard, any suggestions?

i put a little penetrating oil in when i got the engine to free it up a bit and thats about it.

Has the engine been sitting for a period of time? Might want to pull the head and check for rust in cylinders. Is there any water in the lower unit and is it full of oil?

i checked for oil and i checked for rust it didnt look like there was much rust and no it wasnt in water, would the water effect it? i hear squeaking down at the impellar i pulled it off and everything looked ok, im assuming it was because there was no water.

edit - they said they had it running a little before i bought it dunno how long it was sitting before i bought it.

How did you check for rust? What do you mean by not much rust, there should be no rust. Did you just look through the spark plug hole, can't see much of the cylinder walls that way.

pulled out the cover that has the spark plug holes and looked and pulled out the cover to look at the side and i saw no rust at all on the cylinders or cylinder walls was what i meant to say :p

So, it pulls easy without the plugs? This may be over simplification, but do you know how it should feel--that is what is normal for that motor? They are not the easiest thing to pull. But then, I don't know, you might be the Incredible Hulk for all I know.

EDIT: My wife can't start my '54 7.5hp. And she is pretty tough.

ah well when i put the plugs back in i can pull it a little and then its like it will kind of seize up and ill have to take off the pull string case and put the ratchet on the flywheel nut to work it a little to get a few more pulls on it

What plugs are you using? Could be they are long reach plugs?? You should have either Champion J4C or J6C plugs in there...

Siezing up is different than pulling hard. The only two things I can think of is lower unit problems or power head problems. Did you try and pull it over when you had the lower unit off checking the impeller? Maybe a power head, problem, crank or rod problem.

ok i took the lower unit off and i can barely turn it still, i can get like 10 degrees of rotation on the flywheel by doggin on it pretty hard with a ratchet, any ideas whats stopping it from movin?

Agree with FR, got to be internal problems, you can pull the carb and intake and take a look at the crank.

Hmmm, I was going to guess that you had a broken release spring in the drive shaft to the lower unit, but with lower unit pulled, that can't be it.
