I recently acquired a 1988 19' stingray with a Mercruiser 3.7LX engine, which has some problems. My questions is could the main bearings, rod bearings, and rods from a ford 460 engine work with this 4 cylinder engine. I have heard that the head will bolt on but am not sure about the rest. Thank you.

Howdy,

No. It's not a 1/2 Ford 460.....It's a Mercruiser designed aluminum block closed cooled engine that happens to use a Ford 460 cast iron head (+rockers/valves/springs). That's about all the similarities there is with a 460.

If your engine is basically "junk" your best bet might be to either get a long block or (if you trust a machine shop to do it right) get it rebuilt.

Let me also add that a better choice might be to find a good used 4.3L V-6 and replace it with that. You also migh thave to change the drive but your drive is worth quite a lot and you can get an SEI drive for a fairly good price.

The 3.7 uses a 460 Ford head. It also uses 460 rods, pistons, rings and Ford bearings (not sure which Ford engine the bearing s are the same as). The head does have a cooling hose fitting which a car/truck engine doesn't have.

I got my pistons/rings/main/rod bearings from Speed Pro for a couple hundred. They know all about the 470. Lifters (HT900) came from Summit Racing for $3 each.

I do not belive that my engine is junk yet, it just had a rod bearing go and I was looking for bearings. I figured while I have it apart I mine as well freshen up the rest. Where or what is Speed Pro by the way.
