I would look at replacing Cobra drive with an SEI conversion kit.

Re: OMC I/O problems

Your problem is you have bad information....first of all the Cobra is completely different than the stringer drive that had seperate housings with seperate oil fills....on the Cobra there is and upper and lower housing but they share the same oil supply....if you need the right instructions to change the gear oil in one of these...there is an OMC Shop Manual in the 'adults only' sticky on this forum...just look there and it will also answer your questions about drain plugs...I'd suggest you print that out while it's still up and save it..take that aftermarket manual and send it Davey Jone's locker!
Second if you are ever going to have a reliable boat you need to find a good I/O mechanic and get it set up right first...try to do this over the winter...and then read that manual carefully if you want to maintain it yourself...
That's what I did with our Cobra....and it's been pretty reliable ever since...but you must do the maintenance....I/Os are not low maintenance and and do not fogive neglect...

Re: OMC I/O problems

have you tried the marina on US 6 and 9?

they dont have alot there but they are pretty close to you...

there are several marinas near me but they are all expensive...they charge 95.00 per hour and up to 150.00 per hour on odd-ball stuff...

you still doing boat interiors...? I am looking to get a few things recovered myself...

I don't do interior stuff unless it's my own and I can lift it. My father is still doing it. He also does antique cars in the winter. Call him at AAA Boat 260-856-4112. He would be happy to do it for you and has many more years of exp. then me.

Did you ever drain the drive?
If it is a Cobra 4.3 it holds 64 ounces of gear lube. Many water intrusion problems are from the drain, fill and dipstick gaskets not being replaced.
Any Johnson-Evinrude dealer sells them.
You really need the REAL factory manual..
Here is a download for one but the printed version is best.

Here is the original printed manual...expensive but worth every dime!
The seller's name is Don.Tell him Gary in NC sent you and ask if he has any of them that are used and a lower price...;)

no it definitely is not !
If it is good or not is not the issue any more. With warer in the lube. Metal chunks on the magnetic screws, etc...I just want to ensure that the motor is fine. I Intend to have the I/O replaced. I truley believe it is fubar. Thanks for the info.:(

Re: OMC I/O problems

Great news....After saving some money I hired a 'free lance' guy who deals in rebuit OMC I/O's. After about 1200.00 more the boat is now running great and I was able to enjoy the lake for a season. I got a real OMC manual...They are as good as gold. They explain so much more then the off brand manuals..I'd like to thank all of you for your help and patience with me. I promise never to run my boat again dry and will always use muffs or better yet take it to the privite ramp of our subdivision. I do have a question about Props. I now have a 19x15 (well almost 15) prop. When I tryed to put my old 15" prop all it did was increase the RPMS and suck more gas. What is the general rule of thumb about props. Also I have a new trim sending unit but the Brown/white wire is non exsitant. This accourding to my OMC manual is the sending that comes from my trim sender that tells how many ohms, etc so that the new gauge I bought will function. Did 4 winns or omc change the color of the wire?
